Alpha Comments

Vince-
Cool intro. Funny music. I love the concept… very cool.

Matt-
Maybe a different background color than white. Great concept. The pictures… are they placeholders? Because to me they seem a bit simplistic.

Liz-
Ink bottle effect was very cool. I like the overall look, but like Dr. Dailey said, the font didn’t seem quite right to me.

John-
I liked the look of the ant… also liked the movement. I think a little movement on the head of the ant would be good too.

Sam-
I like the overall layout. The brochure looks very sharp. All the different parts look good. You’ve done a lot of work! Great job!

Jeff-
Love seeing you combining your interests. Is that round ride behind ‘Coaster Cast’ on the banner actually a roller coaster? It seems like it’s a different kind of ride to me. Cool that you’re hooked into iTunes.

Ding-
I like the image of the mountains at the top. A good idea and a good layout.

Tim-
Well, we didn’t get to see too much from the presentation, but kudos to being able to get the auto-play to work.

Jake-
Good lighting. I think I saw a jump shot when she gets frustrated. Very funny. A good teaser.

Richard-
Great color scheme and lighting. Interesting ideas… I like that you’re going into history and all that. If you were going for cool lighting, I think you achieved it.

VINCE- I like the idea. The interface you propose looks good too. The load screen looks great and is super funny. Can’t wait to see the Beta.

MATT- Your DVD design is simple and that is a good thing. Rather than go for something complicated you’ve gone with a good aesthetic. The main page is clean and looks easy to navigate. The menu page from my perspective in the classroom is a little muddled. The SCRIPT menu is simple too and works well. The use of a notepad graphic on this page is slick.

LIZ- Good idea for a DVD. The text on the menu you should us looks good. However, on a large screen the smaller text buttons are hard to read. The font is a little tough to read. Your project is coming along nicely.

RICK- Highly stylized lighting. The key light is too dark, while the backlight is too strong. I would flip the focus and make sure the stronger light is on the front of the bottles. However, all in all I really like your approach.

ERIC- Good idea for a short. Footage looks good. Lighting is good. Shot composition looks really good.

John- Bug looks good. Facing a huge pile of animation myself and I understand it takes a long time to complete.

SAM- I like your new website approach. I think the visual aesthetic looks great. I like how everything is intuitive and simple. The pages are lumped together well. The brochure looks good too. The design is not cluttered and that could have been a problem with having so much information to convey. Good project Sam.

JEFF- Nice work. I like the logo. Creating a Video Cast sounds like an interesting project and the footage you have so far looks great. Can’t wait to see the logo at the end of the piece. During your highlight reel you might want some text to pop up for each coaster we watch. Just to keep the audience in the know.

YUNXUE DING- I like your website. It is a simple aesthetic which I think is extremely important to maintain on a website. Tabs are great way to separate content. Good work.

TIM- I assume you have a ton of work already done on this. This project is going to be really good.

Hello everyone!

Nice to see you here!

I have updated my website, here is the address: http://yding.iweb.bsu.edu/

Thank you!

Ideas for Alpha

Vince:
The graphic design is not completed. However, the video idea is very interesting. Wait to see the final product.

Matt:
Cute graphics for a reel demo DVD. Nicely done. However, I am not really sure the graphics can reveal your own personality.

Liz:
Interesting work. Very artistic touch. Let me think of doing something with some Chinese symbols. I NEED TO MASTER ON AFTER EFFECT TOO!

Rich: Interesting lighting test. I don't know you are into production too! Really cool!

Eric: Cat video... meow!

John Berle: Ants...ants....ants... where are you going?

Jeff: Wonderful podcast! The videos edited very smooth with the music by Brain. Can't wait to see the final version!

Ding: Wonderful works as the first time web developing. The Chinese stamp as navigation bar is very creative!!! I rarely see this design! You really good at bringing new elements together!

Tim: Wonderful graphics. I want a horse too.

Jake: Very interesting idea. Something like this "the inside story of motion graphic designer" is very interesting. About animation, you can look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9_VMngcubs

I missed the Alpha night as well. Here is a link to my website for a local insurance company in Lima, OH. I am not too excited about the looks, their logo sucks. I can say that because I helped create it! One thing I learned about business, if the client likes it and you don't...shut your mouth and take the money.

Anyway, I am using PHP, CSS, and whatever else I can throw in. The buttons are not working properly, it is my first time with CSS buttons.

I look forward to Thursday to see what everyone else is working on.

Notes for Beta

Vince – going to be interesting to see where he takes it. Lots of work for him left to do.

Matt Graff – It’s a very simple looking design. I am excited to see what it will look like with his animations

Liz – I understand the difficulty in the animation. I think it looks pretty good.

Richard - It’s about alcohol…how could It possibly be back?

Mr. Crosier – Interesting idea. I hope it’s the projector, but it looked a little dark. Should’ve had someone other than Brian “Balls” Handler to light it, but other than that not bad.

Sam – nice job on the site.

Jeff – cool idea. Make some money off the itunes thing

Ding – I like learning about different cultures.

Tim – A little confused as to what he's trying to do (maybe i dosed off and missed the intro)

Jacob – I like the idea. Very fun

My notes from round one

Vince Martin – MMORPG real life is just a simulation.

Interesting concept. How can I get more health, I’ve had a cold lately.

It sounds like a lot of work and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Matt Graf – DVD demo reel. If you are looking for a job as an animator, it looks great. If you are looking for a job in corporate, you might want it to look a little more business-like.

Liz Meyer – Cool title splash page…nice animation of ink spill (splash).

Good idea to tie in to corporate logo like on their business cards.

Richard – Back after tape heads get cleaned. History channel meets food network. Vodka and martinis. It’s fun to use the colors in lighting, but be careful when that color falls on people. The tinted fleshtone can make people look either feverish or sick. For recreating a bar, it should be pretty cool.

Eric - I missed the argument video while running for the head cleaner. Something with a cat.

John’s animation – Bugs…very complicated and I can understand how a major motion picture takes hundreds of people years to make.

Sam – Digital Storytelling Graduate Program Web Site. Looks pretty good. I especially like the international map page. It would be nice to have a place for student projects.

Jeff – Wow! I like the look of the site. It looks like the big time. The link to the iTunes is very familiar and I might have to subscribe. I like the logo type too.

Ding – Web site. I like the traditional Chinese seal, good cultural identification. I think I would enjoy looking at your photo gallery when finished.

Jake – Animator doodling gumdrop? Good tease, so I want to see more!

Bravisimo!

Wonderful to see all the work on display. Here are a few of my accolades.

What I admire is how much goes on "behind" the scenes to accomplish what may seem simple to others for those of us learning a completely new area. Applause to those who jumped out of their primary skill area.

Thanks to all who then show us "how" you are doing what you are working on...I find the details very helpful in understanding the process better.

Helpful tips I learned: use the animation preset to send your quick time output from AE it does make a big difference in quality of output. Hope my project is in working order on Thurs. Had a time of reconstructing because of files going off line between my IBM transfer to Mac. I found a command that let's you link all the files before you leave not leaving them behind.

Kudos, Liz

Alpha Comments

VINCE- I like the idea of using of Dr. Chesebro's infamous lectures and basing a project on it.  The setup seems very straightforward and easy to use.

MATHEW GRAF-I agree that there is not enough contrast but otherwise nice.

ELIZABETH MEYER- Love the ink spill the best, definitely has a very fluid look to it.  A lot of effort is apparent.

ERIC- WOuld love to see where this is going, mystical cats are a fun teaser.  The editing is pretty smooth minus the obvious missing shot, it's a rough draft so i cant wait to see more.

The bug animation was impressive, definitely a bold effort for this class.

SAM-  A very worthy wesbite for the Digital Storytelling department.  Very detailed and informative.

JEFF-  The video of the roller coasters was very nicely shot.  It's not easy to successfully pan something that flies by really fast.

DING- The pictures are nice.

TIM- The budweiser graphic is very appealing.  I like the concept of a do it yourself concept to teach basic editing.

JAKE- I can't wait to see where this is going.  The lighting is definitely the highlight and gives me a somewhat film-noir feeling.  The production value looks very solid.

Believe it or not animation is tough

The project has been coming along slowly. I knew animation was going to be tough, but I really had no idea how tedious it would be. I'm eager to get to work this week and get as far as I can before Beta Thursday. The live action is about 90% completed in terms of editing.

See y'all Thursday.

Missed The Alpha... Looking Forward To The Beta

So I missed Alpha night, but for what it's worth I showed up last Thursday when I thought the Alpha was due. I have a pretty good start as far as my content and text is concerned, but I'm just getting into the construction of my website. I'm looking forward to sharing my project with you all on Thursday and excited to see what you all have been working on.

Whatcha!

I don't have a lot of update at this point but I'm sure I will for my alpha on Thursday. I am fully aware that I'm going to crash it after I return from Kings Island on April 20th!

While you're waiting, go to your iTunes and go to the iTunes Store, type in CoasterCast and subscribe it! It's free! Yeah I know I'm promoting to my peermate. I gotta start somewhere! ;-)
